Diagram labels and functions
| Structure / stage | Function |
|---|---|
| Nuclear envelope | Double membrane around the nucleus. |
| Nuclear pores | Gateways for RNA and proteins. |
| Chromatin | DNA packaged with proteins. |
| Nucleolus | Assembles ribosome subunits. |
| Nucleoplasm | Fluid inside the nuclear envelope. |
Structure of the cell nucleus
The nuclear envelope is a double membrane punctured by pores. Inside, chromatin stores DNA and the nucleolus assembles ribosome subunits.
Why the nucleus is a control centre
The nucleus does not directly run every reaction. It controls activity by regulating which genes are copied into RNA and therefore which proteins a cell makes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a cell nucleus diagram show?
It shows the envelope, pores, chromatin, nucleoplasm and nucleolus.
What is the function of the nucleolus?
It builds ribosomal RNA and assembles ribosome subunits.
Do prokaryotic cells have a nucleus?
No. Their DNA occupies a nucleoid region without a nuclear membrane.
