How to read the cell cycle diagram
Interphase contains G1, S and G2. M phase then separates the copied chromosomes and divides the cytoplasm before the cycle begins again.
Why checkpoints matter
Checkpoints pause the cycle if DNA is damaged, replication is incomplete or chromosomes are not correctly attached to the spindle.
