The fluid mosaic model
The membrane is fluid because phospholipids and many proteins can move sideways. It is a mosaic because different proteins, lipids and carbohydrate groups are scattered through it.
How substances cross the membrane
Small non-polar molecules diffuse through the bilayer. Ions and many polar molecules need channels or carriers, while active transport uses ATP to move substances against a concentration gradient.
